New features and updates for June 2020

Always aiming to be more social, the latest version of the Teach on Mars app gives pride of place to dialogue between learners, in particular by allowing them to tag each other and also post images in the comments section of the Wall. More interaction helps foster regular habits and better engagement of learners.

Tagging is here!

Everyone knows about tagging on social media – how did we ever live without it? Your learners can now tag their peers on the Wall: they simply enter “@” in a comment and start typing a learner’s name to tag them: “Hey @Julian, you MUST read this!”. The person tagged will then get a notification on their Wall, taking them directly to the content.

Image sharing for learners

Learners already had the option of posting web links in their comments to exchange resources. Now they can send images from their smartphone gallery or camera. Experience sharing is here! Your learners can post a photo or image of their favourite product, their current mood, or a screenshot of their “clear round” performance in the latest challenge on your app. Encourage them to publish their best images and inspire them yourself with your own posts. A great way of creating competitive spirit and retaining your audience!

On the Mission Center side

Your Mission Center is also getting some upgrades.

Always working to enhance our protection of personal data, we record any data activity carried out: the creation, modification, deletion or large-scale exports of personal data are now recorded in a file.

We’ve also set up an email report on automatic CSV imports: an email is now sent to the Mission Center administrator when a group of learners is automatically imported. This states whether the import was successful or not. It also contains a log stating the changes made.

The push notifications and alerts system has been improved: activity reminder notifications are no longer added incrementally to the dot on the app icon, and they now always link directly to an activity. This is simpler and more consistent!

Finally, a new indicator identifies learners who’ve logged in to the app since the last anniversary date of the contract. This allows you to monitor the licenses used in our “Enterprise” offer.

But that’s not all. We’re constantly striving to improve our mobile learning solution and fix the bugs that any IT solution can be faced with. For more details, feel free to consult the version history in our Help Center.

Maximise leverage of your training data with business intelligence (BI)

Mobile learning allows you to develop the skills of your employees so they can master their jobs, learn about your company and optimise efficiency in their daily activities… But how can you validate the success of your learning system? In addition to the data provided by the administration interface of your training solution, a business intelligence tool will be your best ally.


Why use business intelligence in digital learning scenarios?

Analysing the behaviour of your learners when using their training app is a key element for ensuring the success of your mobile learning initiative. With the right dashboards, you can track your performance indicators at a glance, understand the expectations of your learners, adjust your system, improve it and make it even more powerful.

For example, by observing the days and times when your learners are most active on the Wall of their app (time spent on articles, use of bookmarks, likes, shares, comments), you can determine the best time to publish, achieve better open and share rates for your communications than you’ve ever seen, and thus reach the widest possible audience.

You’ll also be able to identify the best learners so they can be rewarded, or even identify the least diligent to engage them, for example via communications with push notifications. You’ll also find out which training and learning activities work best, and can then promote them or adapt your other content to identical templates so that you maximise appeal and meet the needs of your learning community.

Business intelligence with Teach on Mars

Although you’re completely free to use whatever data you want to produce business intelligence, Teach on Mars has created a set of dashboards (on PowerBI) so that you can quickly track the indicators we consider to be key! So what questions will Teach on Mars business intelligence allow you to answer? Here are just a few.

Use of your app over a given period:

  • The channels used by your learners (web, iOS, Android, all three?)
  • The number of training courses started and/or completed
  • The average basket of training items (activities, communications, etc.)
  • How often your application is used


Communication effectiveness:

  • What types of communication are most looked at?
  • When do your learners look at them?
  • What interactions do your learners have with communications?

Who your learners really are:

  • Who are the most active learners over a given period?
  • Who has won the most points?
  • On average, how many training courses do they do?
  • How much time do they spend?
  • At what time of day do your learners do their training?

Hidden aspects of your training courses:

  • Which categories are most used?
  • Which training courses are bestsellers?
  • What is the average progression of learners on different courses?
  • How many learners complete courses? How many become certified?
  • What types of activity are most often launched?

This list is not exhaustive but it already gives you an idea of the secrets that can be revealed.

What does the Teach on Mars business intelligence offer consist of?

The “BI” package offered by Teach on Mars allows you to connect your business intelligence tool to your Mission Center to increase the ways in which your training statistics can be analysed: study your data over specific periods, filter by several customised fields at the same time, aggregate it with data from your other tools, etc. Here’s the full rundown of our “BI” offer:

  • Availability of all Mission Center data: Exported daily or weekly (depending on the option you choose), all Mission Center data is stored in a secure space accessible to you, ready for use in the “BI” tool of your choice (Table, PowerBI, etc.)
  • Predefined dashboards on PowerBI: So that you can get started straight away, we offer several dashboards (some of which you will have seen in this article); these are specifically designed to analyse your learning system both rapidly and in depth, so you can keep improving it. Confined to their homes like many Europeans, the Martians continue to develop, test and deploy new Mission Center solutions for their clients and their Teach on Mars applications. Here’s what we have for you this month.



A facelift for your Mission Center

To facilitate your browsing in the Mission Center, we’ve made some improvements in terms of user-friendliness (#UX) and graphic interface (#UI): simplified pagination of your lists (of learners, training sessions and managers), category suggestions according to user input, short cuts from the training course administration page, submenu visible at all times from the training environment, dates added for the first and last session in learner statistics, and much more.


When this new Mission Center is deployed, the latest additions will be marked by illuminated hotspots on which you can click to find out more.

Alternate between Excel® templates and your web authoring tool!

You’re working on a training session in a web authoring tool. What if you’re not done creating your activity, but need to leave your workplace for the countryside where you won’t have internet access? No worries! Download your activity in Excel® format in your preferred languages and any necessary media. Make changes offline, then import them in the web authoring tool when you’re ready to put your work online.




Move seamlessly between design templates and your web authoring tool and vice versa!

Useful: This function for exporting/importing between Excel® templates and the web authoring tool also enables you to move or copy a learning activity from one training course to another.


New SSO technology

Are you familiar with Single Sign-On (SSO)? It allows you to use your current user account database (login names + passwords) rather than recreating accounts for everyone in your Mission Center. Your learners can then connect to their training app with the login information they know. We provide this option by default with the SAML technology. And now we also offer it via the JSON Web Token (JWT).

Late 2019 sees the release of Callisto, one of the most significant steps forward for the Teach on Mars solution since its creation. Callisto has been built to reinforce the human dimension of mobile-led learning, placing the individual at the heart of the learning experience. So you’ll find proprietary social functionality built into our solution for the first time, with learners now able to interact with each other, share their experience and air their opinions from within the app.

Rich new interaction and user-generated content

In Callisto, the Wall becomes a Social Wall, giving and brand new voice to your learners. They can now comment on publications, react to each others’ comments and even add links that display in thumbnail format.
And to keep everything in check, learners can also flag inappropriate comments for moderation via the Mission Center by the system administrator.



Very soon (Q1 2020), learners will also be able to add their own images, gifs and videos to their comments. And just like they can on Facebook- or LinkedIn, they can now mention other learners, who’ll receive that all-important instant Push notification that they’ve been namechecked.



Learning Recommendations

Callisto unveils a brand new multiple-choice quiz activity that will use a learner’s answers to steer him to exactly the right combination of learning activities to perfect his skillset.

You can also have Callisto’s all-new AI algorithm send recommended learning activities – including most popular training courses and those your peers have been following – direct to your Wall once a week. Never miss a hot piece of content again!

Direct Links to Training Courses

We’ve added a feature enabling you to set up direct links to other training content from your Articles and Mobile Courses. So now you can link resources together to encourage learners to pass smoothly from one training course to another.


WeChat Single Sign-On

If your learners are among the one billion worldwide that are WeChat users, they can now connect to Teach on Mars directly with their WeChat ID.

Deep Dive into your data with Business Intelligence

With Callisto, you can now connect your dedicated Business Intelligence tools directly to the Teach on Mars Mission Center to take your analysis to the next level. Home in on data from a precise period; compare data from period to period; apply multiple data filters simultaneously. Then roll all that up into the complete management dashboard data provided by your other tool-suites. Installation of a BI connector is an extra-cost option that ToM-Enterprise licence-holders can activate by contacting their Teach on Mars Project Manager.



Manager Dashboard: track learning operations wherever you are

For the first time ever, managers can now view all the stats and KPIs they need to monitor their team’s development activity directly in their mobile app thanks to this new add-on, available as an extra-cost option. Learners, training courses, time spent, completion percentages, progress, engagement – you can now put it all right there in their pockets!

Flexible Offline & Online Content Authoring

Need to go offline but haven’t quite finished working on your latest piece of learning content? No problem – simply download your content into a Teach on Mars Excel® template and you can carry on your work on the go. Take as many language versions as you need – and even export your media if you like.
Then re-import your Excel® template into the Web Authoring tool whenever you like and get your fully updated version on-line again. You can now switch back and forth between the two creation options quickly and seamlessly!

Share Communication Templates with managers through your Mission Center

Mission Center super-users can now create their own customised, reusable Communication Templates, which they can then save and share with other managers. This is great for ensuring consistent, impactful communication to large learner populations across multiple regions or markets.

New-look Communications Hub

App managers can now choose between two views – Grid or List – for more clarity. They can also choose exactly which communications they want to display by filtering with a range of criteria including communication type, date and author or by focusing on most recent or most popular communications.

CSV Export of Wall Statistics

You can now get invaluable insight into the social activity of your learner populations by exporting your Wall statistics in CSV format. Leverage this data to optimise your communications strategy and drive engagement levels even higher.



Record points in SCORM-compatible Web activities

Third-party Web activities offer huge instructional design potential. With Callisto, SCORM-compatible Web activities can now record points scored in the Mission Center like any other activity. So you can take them into account in your highest-performing learner rankings and also include them in score-dependent learning paths.

For this autumn, Web App games have been given a makeover, data exports from training courses have been improved, and the Survey activity can now be exported in CSV format. Join the tour to explore three exciting new features.

Games land on the Web App

The gamified learning activities of your favourite training app have been produced in a Web version. You can now find Wordspool, Pick a Word, Fill the Gap and many more on the big screen. Only the Quiz Game, whose Duel mode has lit up multiple face-to-face sessions, continues to be available in an exclusively mobile format.

Because feedback from learners is essential for continually improving your content, the Survey activity allows you to poll your audience. Thanks to the new CSV export format, you can now exploit the results of these surveys more easily, in either anonymous or open versions according to your needs.

What’s next?

Updates to mobile applications are planned for October. Many new features are in the pipeline, including the possibility of learners posting comments on the Wall, a new design for application pop-ups, the option of connecting to Apps via WeChat login details, a new type of content in articles and mobile courses, exports of statistics into communications, the overhaul of Excel® design templates, and lots of other new ideas that we’re keeping under wraps for now!

As summer draws to a close, it’s time to get your autumn off to a successful start. Take advantage of the latest new features from the Mission Center to clean up your learner database, send specific communications to carefully curated lists, and include, for example, a direct link to a learning activity.

From the learners page, you can now select a list of people to send communications to.

On the communications page, simply select the login of learners you want to contact; suggestions will help you find your recipients:

Inserting quotes in training content

Like the web authoring tool, Excel® design templates allow you to display quotes in your app’s content. This is a great time to update the layout of your mobile training courses and Wall articles so that your content is easy to read and assimilate.

Deleting multiple learners

Does your learner database need a spring clean? No need to panic, we’ve created a quick way of deleting learners. To perform this operation, the Mission Center manager must be assigned the role “Can delete learners massively“:

There are two ways of deleting learners. You can either select them from a list, then click on the delete button:

Or you can use mass management, then click on Delete learners, and import a CSV file containing the list of emails to be deleted from the database:

Memorising your paging preferences

If you’re a frequent visitor to the Mission Center, you’ll love the fact that you can now configure the number of rows you want to display in lists of learners, training courses and communications. For example, you may want to view 50 rows of learners, 100 rows of communications, and 20 rows of training courses. Your Mission Center will remember your preferences!

Direct links to learning activities

Direct links to content and communications were introduced at Teach on Mars in the spring (Cf. Nine best practices to recruit and retain your learners via link sharing).

You can now also create links to learning activities, so that a given activity can be directly accessed from anywhere: an email, communication, another training course, push notification, etc. What better way of promoting your content and diversifying your communications?
