This is enough to convince you that you are at the right place!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The use of smartphones is growing and some marketers have found a way to take another advantage of it: use the Bluetooth capabilities of these devices to identify, locate and tease people in their shops. To do this, they simply install beacons!<\/p>\n<h4>What is a beacon and how does it work?<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/beacons1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2230 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/beacons1.jpg\" alt=\"beacons1\" width=\"308\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A beacon is a small, low-powered, durable and low-cost piece of hardware that radiates Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) signals. These signals aim at waking up compatible apps installed on smartphones and tablets within a range of about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/beacons-the-humble-low-cost-device-that-is-changing-how-big-retail-chains-do-business-2014-8?IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">50 meters<\/a>. Developers design mobile applications with location-based actions and notifications i.e. actions and notifications that are triggered when they are within range of the\u00a0related beacons.<\/p>\n<h4>When did these small but sturdy signposts appear? &#8230;<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Apple pioneered the use of beacons. In 2013, the group started to equip all of its some 250 US Apple Stores, before extending their use to their\u00a0international points of sale. Since then other retailers have followed, Macy&#8217;s chain and American Eagle Outfitters to name a few.<\/p>\n<h4>\u2026 And how long will they last?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The market potential is huge. According to some <a href=\"http:\/\/siliconvalley.blog.lemonde.fr\/2014\/04\/21\/comment-les-beacons-vont-revolutionner-le-commerce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ABI Researches<\/a>, it is estimated that over 800 million smartphones will use the indoor geo-location by 2018. This will become as common as the GPS today.<\/p>\n<h4>What about privacy, one might ask?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The use of beacons should not be too intrusive. A balance needs be created, not to drown smartphone holders under a barrage of messages and promotional offers, as much\u00a0as many applications already send notifications to their users.\u00a0Privacy worries are valid, but as long as beacon programs are optional, consumers are receptive.<\/p>\n<h4>How could beacon serve mobile learning? &#8230;<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Beacons may be used to create proximity-based learning applications. Let\u2019s imagine visiting a museum. We place beacons around the museum, and develop a learning app that allows visitors to get extra information on their phones as they walk around the exhibits.\u00a0Beacons may also allow unlocking contents based on the context, where the training takes place: a factory, a building in the case of\u00a0employees on boarding programs. With beacons, trainers can set up\u00a0educational track games, with the release\u00a0of activities when learners are at the right physical place.
