One of these exclusive sessions is the SkyLAB, which celebrated its comeback on Tuesday 5th December in Paris after a few months\u2019 break.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What exactly is the SkyLAB?<\/h2>\n<p>This twice yearly gathering, held face-to-face in Paris, is a get together and brainstorming session run by our Academy to consider, with our clients, the issues and challenges they face on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>These themed sessions are split into three parts:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Welcome breakfast,<\/li>\n<li>Plenary session on a chosen topic,<\/li>\n<li>Working groups and feedback,<\/li>\n<li>All with a good helping of networking!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The topic chosen for this return was <strong><em>&#8220;Rewarding \u2013 received ideas and alternatives&#8221;<\/em><\/strong>, on how\u00a0generating an efficient rewards strategy with which to motivate learners.<\/p>\n<h2>Unable to attend? Here\u2019s a roundup of the key takeaways!<\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1- Learners motivation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To best contextualise rewarding, we started by establishing the status of the main theories of motivation.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All learning stems from it. Without this initial placing into motion, without this impetus from the heart, the mind \u2013 and even the body \u2013 learning is impossible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><em>(Vianin, 2007)<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3>Theory 1 : intrinsic vs extrinsic<\/h3>\n<p>Intrinsic motivation is the act of doing something because it is interesting and enjoyable (curiosity, challenge, creativity, etc.).<br \/>\nExtrinsic motivation is driven by external rewards (certificate, gift, etc.).<\/p>\n<h3>Theory 2 : self-determination<\/h3>\n<p>According to this theory, people have 3 universal needs to feel:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>autonomy<\/li>\n<li>competence<\/li>\n<li>relatedness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People have a natural desire to learn, driven by the need to feel <strong>autonomous<\/strong> (I can do it alone), <strong>competent<\/strong> (I\u2019m an expert on this topic) and <strong>related<\/strong> (knowledge on a par with others).<\/p>\n<h4>Theory 3 : reinforcement<\/h4>\n<p>According to this theory developed by B.F. Skinner:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>behaviour followed by pleasant consequences is more likely to be repeated (positive reinforcement)<\/li>\n<li>behaviour followed by an unpleasant consequence is less likely to be repeated (negative reinforcement, punishment, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2- The reward<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In psychology, the reward is a stimulus or an event presented following a behaviour, with the aim of increasing the frequency of that behaviour; it is therefore a <strong>positive reinforcer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3- Rewards and recognition in learning<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the applications in the field of learning:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples of rewards:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tangible: offering a tangible reward after completing a course.<\/li>\n<li>Intangible: offering an intangible reward like certification after completing a course.<\/li>\n<li>Access to additional resources: providing access to additional resources, exclusive content or more advanced courses.<\/li>\n<li>Gamification: integrate gamification tools including points, badges, levels, etc. to make the learning experience more engaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples of acknowledgement:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Create a culture of appreciation: celebrate big and small successes, by publicly acknowledging learners\u2019 efforts (on the wall for example with top learners)<\/li>\n<li>Encourage positive feedback: provide constructive and positive comments to build trust and stimulate motivation<\/li>\n<li>Peer learning: Encourage learners to share their knowledge by organising peer presentations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4- Structure your reward policy<\/span><\/h2>\n<table style=\"height: 981px;\" border=\"oui\">\n<tbody>\n<tr style=\"height: 79px;\">\n<td style=\"height: 79px;
