{"id":28918,"date":"2021-02-18T19:24:20","date_gmt":"2021-02-18T18:24:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/blog\/2021\/02\/malediction-du-savoir-biais-cognitif-formateur\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T16:58:32","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T15:58:32","slug":"curse-of-knowledge-trainers-cognitive-bias","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/en\/blog\/2021\/02\/curse-of-knowledge-trainers-cognitive-bias\/","title":{"rendered":"The curse of knowledge, trainers\u2019 cognitive bias"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.8.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>The curse of knowledge is a cognitive bias that occurs when an individual communicating with other individuals, unknowingly assumes that the others have the background to understand.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2>Before going any further\u2026\u200b<\/h2>\n<p>Before exploring the curse of knowledge concept, ask yourself these 3 simple questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As a learner have you ever sat open-mouthed thinking, \u201c<em>wow, he\u2019s talking gibberish\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>As a trainer, have you ever struggled to communicate a concept because the vocabulary you used required prior knowledge of the subject?<\/li>\n<li>As a trainer, have you ever felt helpless when faced with your learner&#8217;s lack of understanding and your own ability to put yourself in his or her shoes?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>You\u2019re not the only one!<\/h2>\n<p>This concept, coined by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robin_M._Hogarth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robin Hogarth<\/a> in 1986 (Curse of Knowledge) addresses the difficulty of a person having acquired a particular item of knowledge to \u201cbacktrack\u201d, that is, to recreate their state of mind. Let\u2019s look at a specific example, the famous \u201c<em>Where\u2019s Wally?<\/em>\u201d books. As long as you are unaware of Wally\u2019s location, he seems totally absent and impossible to find. Once you know where he is, it becomes hard to imagine how invisible he is for other people and this can even become frustrating at times.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-28270 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/wheres-wally-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"illustration ou est charlie malediction du savoir\" width=\"525\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Training and education, the two major victims<\/h2>\n<p>\u201c<em>All grown-ups were once children\u2026but only a few of them remember it,<\/em>\u201d Antoine de Saint Exup\u00e9ry. As you will have understood, it is extremely hard to remember the difficulties we faced before fully grasping a topic or a tool. Without being able to put ourselves in the learner\u2019s place, it\u2019s complicated for trainers to provide optimal support, to flag or pinpoint important issues for learners.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s do a test, imagine you no longer have Internet on your computer and you\u2019d like to get it back.<br \/>Below is part of a tutorial I found after doing a quick search:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tutoriel-1.png&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;60%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;60%&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>On a scale of 0-5, how well did you understand this part of the tutorial? Personally, I\u2019d give it 4\/5!<\/p>\n<p>And here is another part of the same tutorial:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/www.teachonmars.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/tutoriel-2-1.png&#8221; align=&#8221;center&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; width=&#8221;60%&#8221; max_width=&#8221;60%&#8221;][\/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.1&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>On a scale of 0-5, how well did you understand this part of the tutorial? Personally, I\u2019d give it 2\/5!<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s ask ourselves a few questions about the answer provided:<br \/>When considering the question, \u201c<em>I have an internet connection problem, how can I solve it?<\/em>\u201d, can we guess the <strong>learner\u2019s level<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If yes, can we consider that the answer is suited to the learner\u2019s implied level?<\/li>\n<li>If no, can we consider that the answer is suited to all levels?<\/li>\n<li>Did we answer the question? Is the answer satisfactory?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the grades you gave above, would you have given the same grades if you were 12 or 70 years old? This issue raises so many questions which require an answer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Training for the benefit of learners<\/h2>\n<p>Remember: you cannot overcome the curse. So, you\u2019ll need to work with this cognitive bias in mind. We\u2019d like to give you some good practices to put in place in order to alleviate its impact.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stipulate the necessary prerequisites<\/strong>. When creating content which is not designed for novices, stipulate what knowledge is necessary to do the course under good conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adapt the vocabulary and the course level to target learners.<\/strong> Your learners cannot concentrate on vocabulary and new concepts to learn. So, get used to connecting a known expression to a new concept.<br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">For example :<\/span> The platform also known as the Mission Center, the Mission Center (the platform, the back office), etc.<br \/>If the learner population is heterogenous, opt for the combo:\n<ul>\n<li>vocabulary<\/li>\n<li>fundamentals recap<\/li>\n<li>link to an annexed course<br \/><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">For example :<\/span> for this course, you\u2019ll need to be at ease with the concepts of IP address, VPN, etc. If you do not fully master these subjects, please do the \u201cIT beginners\u201d course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test your content on a sample of the population.<\/strong> It is important to test a population with the same level of skill as the target. Gather feedback from this target and do not judge their feedback, remember that the curse of knowledge skewers your assessment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to these different means, your learners will only open relevant content, while <strong>completion and retention levels will be enhanced<\/strong>.
